Where I came from

November 24th, 2011

Happy Thanksgiving! Yesterday was my birthday. Today, I am grateful I was born into this:

Dearest Kyran,

It’s snowing just like it was the morning your world began. What excitement ! There on the edge of the mighty Saint John River. How young we were. Living in a mouse infested tiny apartment. It consisted of one large room, a bed room and a shared bathroom. In one corner of the bedroom , we had set up your cot. All ready for you with soft flannel sheets and fuzzy blankets and one yellow knitted duck, my sister had given it to me when she found out I was pregnant. I wouldn’t buy baby clothes as i was afraid to jinx things. My sister had just lost her first baby and I had to hold my breath for a year as I knew how fragile life was.

Your Dad was positively gleeful. He had been given the best Christmas gift ever! Your arrival was deeply profound. He loved holding you in the brace of his legs while lying in the bed staring at your tiny beautiful face. You looked so wise and so knowing. Your Grandmother in Newfoundland wrote you poems. Your Nana Ferne came up on the bus to see you. Your arrrival eased her grief. She had lost Mike just the year before.

You were a baby we were so ready for. Your arrival was celebrated by family  and friends. Surrounded by love we all breathed life, love and promise into you.

Happy Birthday sweet treasure.

love always and ever,
Your Mom

I assumed you inherited your gift for writing from you Dad. Your Mom’s letter was beautiful. I realized she is also very talented. That was a beautiful birthday gift.
