Reverb10: Make

December 6th, 2010

What was the last thing you made? What materials did you use? Is there something you want to make, but you need to clear some time for it?

(Author: Gretchen Rubin)

This may be wildly optimistic, given how busy it’s gotten around here, but I’m going to say the above work in progress counts as “made.” Materials: copper tubing, ball ornaments, floral wire, glue gun, and lashings of hot tea. I’m knitting a bearded hat for my snowboarding nephew too, but the odds on that are longer. As for making more time, if you’ve got a d-i-y tutorial for that project, send it.

Make? Make? I gonna cry….did you say, buy LOTS of stuff and fantasize about making?

Well, joking aside, I have found this: it’s about squeezing a bit in in the time available, maybe even cutting the thing made to suit the ‘time cloth’ you can chisel out of your day, week, month; and finally trying to be motivated by what you do achieve, as opposed to despndent by what you feel you should have achieved but haven’t.

Cos otherwise you never start. You find yourself one day in a quilting class where one lady announces she quilts for 20 mins every day before she goes out to work for a very demanding employer, and that’s all she gets of a day, and you think – “ha, how awful, I need at least an hour to get into the zone…” Two years later, she has finished half a dozen very nice quilts, while you (that would be me) haven’t even cut out the cloth for one. I chew on this example on a regular basis.

Aesop had it right: slow and steady wins the race. When I get my head around this fact and get over myself and just *start*, things happen.
