Inputs – The Duty-Free Edition

August 3rd, 2012

Things I didn’t do on my summer vacation:

  • Blog every day like I intended.
  • Complete the first three chapters of my novel like I promised.
  • Lose the five pounds I resolved to ditch.
  • Anything remotely productive.

I should feel bad about all of this.

I don’t.

Like Laura said about her summer, it’s been good to be gone.

It’s also good to get back. I’ve got lots to write about.

In the meantime, here are some of the good things I’ve been taking in recently.

I read Game of Thrones, the first book in the Song of Fire and Ice series, while flying home from Blogher last August. I picked up book two at the beginning of this summer, and went on to devour three, four and five while I was away. I can’t remember the last time I gave myself over so obsessively and completely to a fiction series. I can’t remember the last time I willingly stayed up past two in the morning to finish one more chapter, knowing I’d pay for it the next day. The best part was seeing people poring over the books everywhere I went, which helps make up for the popularity of 50 Shades. There may be hope for humankind after all.

Or not:

The Truth Is Out, Ladies: Your Long Hair Is Killing Your Career.

Speaking of “pre-dead lady husks,” I stayed up way past my bedtime last night, watching About Face: Supermodels Then and Now on my Kindle HBO app. It’s a surprisingly profound and diverse collection of thoughts on aging and the business of beauty. I loved it, and I thought of Karen all the way through it, and her birthday post about getting older and better.

I hope your summer has been bringing you many and more good things. Have a wonderful weekend.
