Few brands can afford this caliber of technical insight, my friends.
So, hey, thanks for indulging me as I figure out aloud how I do and don’t want to work with sponsors and advertising on my blog, based on what I experience as a reader of others. The comments have been helpful, and it’s good to know I’m not the only one who prefers sponsored content to be more about the content, and less about the sponsor.
It’s a puzzle I’ve been working on for a while now. Ninety per cent of pitches I receive go straight to spam. They aren’t worth the space in my inbox, let alone on my blog. But some are attractive, especially the ones that say the magic words, “do it your way.”
Maybe some PR folks are finally getting it, because several of these have piqued my interest recently. If you follow me on twitter, you may have already seen that the boys and I are test-driving a Droid Incredible phone, courtesy of Verizon Wireless. It’s fun for me to let my family enjoy a perk from the blog when it feels appropriate. God knows they’ve given me plenty of free material.
My main criteria is that such partnerships support this space, not obstruct or interrupt it. A technical review of a phone is not the kind of thing I do here. For which we can all be grateful. Sharing photos taken with a phone is exactly the kind of thing I do here. So expect to see some of those brought to you by VZWA over the next few months, accompanied by some necessary disclosure language. Patrick and I are also working on a selective sidebar ad strategy that will be distinct from the narrative of the blog, but harmonious with the overall tone and look. More on that when we roll it out this fall.
Aside from the occasional “brought to you by…” you shouldn’t notice much different, except that I may be able to spend a little more time here, planting my dandelions.
